1. Fatigue
Fatigue is one of the most commonly reported side effects of metoprolol. This beta blocker lowers your heart rate and reduces cardiac output, which can make you feel unusually tired even during routine activities. The mechanism behind this fatigue is linked to decreased oxygen delivery to muscles and slower circulation, which can reduce overall energy levels.
In practice, you might notice a marked drop in stamina, needing more rest than usual, or feeling worn out by tasks that were once easy. This can be frustrating but is generally a sign your body is adjusting to the medication.
To manage fatigue effectively:
- Prioritize regular sleep schedules to support recovery.
- Break tasks into smaller steps with rest breaks in between.
- Discuss with your healthcare provider if fatigue severely limits daily function—dose adjustments or timing changes might help.
2. Dizziness
Dizziness, particularly upon standing, is often due to metoprolol’s effect on lowering blood pressure. This is called orthostatic hypotension and results from a temporary drop in blood flow to the brain when moving from sitting or lying down to standing.
You might experience lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or even brief blurred vision during these moments. It typically occurs early in treatment or after dose increases.
To reduce dizziness:
- Rise slowly from beds or chairs, pausing briefly before walking.
- Stay hydrated throughout the day to maintain blood volume.
- Avoid sudden position changes or standing still for long periods.
- Inform your healthcare provider if dizziness leads to falls or fainting episodes.
