1. Identify the flush valve
Begin by removing the toilet tank lid carefully and setting it aside in a safe place. Inside the tank, locate the flush valve; this is the vertical assembly that controls water release when you flush. Typically, it is positioned centrally and features a flapper or a similar sealing mechanism at its base.
The flush valve operates by lifting a flapper or seal when the flush handle is activated, allowing water to flow from the tank into the bowl. Identifying this valve precisely is crucial, as adding weight to it can improve its sealing effectiveness and prevent continuous water leakage.
2. Select an appropriate weight
Choose a small, dense object to serve as the weight. Suitable options include a metal washer, a flat smooth stone, or a small bag of sand. The ideal weight is one that is heavy enough to help press the valve closed firmly, but not so heavy that it interferes with the valve’s ability to open fully during a flush.
Consider these factors when selecting the weight:
- Material durability: Avoid objects that may rust or degrade in water over time.
- Size and shape: The weight should be compact enough to attach without obstructing the valve’s movement.
- Balance: It should provide consistent downward pressure without causing the flapper to remain stuck.
