1. Tiredness and Fatigue
One of the most frequently reported side effects of metoprolol is feeling unusually tired or fatigued. Because metoprolol slows your heart rate and reduces cardiac output, your body might initially struggle to maintain the usual energy levels during daily activities. This can make simple tasks feel more exhausting.
This fatigue often appears within the first few weeks of starting treatment or after a dose increase. For many, these symptoms gradually improve as the body adjusts to the medication. However, persistent or severe tiredness should be discussed with your healthcare provider, as it might indicate the need for dosage adjustment or evaluation for other causes.
2. Dizziness or Lightheadedness
Dizziness, especially upon standing up quickly from a sitting or lying position, is a common side effect linked to metoprolol’s blood pressure-lowering effects. This orthostatic hypotension happens because metoprolol can reduce the normal compensatory increase in heart rate and vascular tone when you change posture.
To manage this, simple measures such as rising slowly and sitting on the edge of the bed or chair for 30 to 60 seconds before standing can help minimize symptoms. If dizziness is severe or leads to falls, contact your doctor promptly for evaluation.
