My neighbor taught me this trick to clean green algae off siding with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

6. Letting solution work

After application, the solution needs time to act. Allow it to sit on the siding for at least 20 to 30 minutes without rinsing. During this period, the vinegar and dish soap break down the algae’s structure, loosening its grip on the siding.

For areas with heavy algae buildup, letting the solution remain for up to an hour can improve results. Avoid scrubbing during this time, as the solution alone is doing the work. If rain is forecast, plan your cleaning to avoid diluting the solution prematurely.

7. Rinsing off algae

Once the solution has had sufficient time to work, rinse the siding thoroughly with a garden hose equipped with a spray nozzle. Start rinsing from the top down to prevent streaks and ensure all loosened algae and residue wash away.

The water pressure from a hose is typically enough to remove the algae after treatment. For particularly stubborn spots, a second application and rinse may be necessary. Avoid using high-pressure washers, which can damage siding surfaces.

8. Protecting plants and pets

Although the cleaning solution is mild, it can still harm plants and irritate pets. Before applying, thoroughly water any nearby plants to minimize absorption of the solution. Covering delicate plants with plastic sheeting offers additional protection.

Keep pets and children away from the treatment area until the siding has been rinsed and dried completely. Avoid spraying directly on garden beds or lawns, as repeated exposure to vinegar can affect soil health and plant growth.
