A simple mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water is sufficient to tackle these deposits.
This solution is safe for most glass types and avoids the harsh chemicals found in many commercial cleaners. It is important, however, not to use vinegar on delicate or antique glassware, as acidity may damage some finishes. Vinegar is also widely available and environmentally friendly compared to synthetic cleaners.
4. Effect of baking soda
Baking soda complements vinegar’s cleaning action by acting as a mild abrasive and reacting chemically when combined with vinegar. This reaction produces carbon dioxide bubbles that help lift grime and residues from the glass surface. Baking soda’s gentle abrasiveness can remove stubborn spots without scratching the glass.
It is crucial not to mix baking soda and vinegar in a closed container, as the fizzing reaction produces gas that can build pressure. Instead, use them sequentially or in a soaking solution where the reaction can proceed safely. Avoid using baking soda on delicate glassware where even mild abrasives might cause damage.
5. No-scrub soaking method
The no-scrub soaking method relies on soaking cloudy glasses in a vinegar-water solution to let the acid naturally dissolve mineral deposits. Fill a basin or sink with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water, then fully submerge the cloudy glasses. Let them soak without agitation or scrubbing.
This approach avoids physical abrasion, reducing the risk of scratches or damage. After soaking, rinse with warm water to remove loosened deposits and vinegar residue. This method is unsuitable for fragile or antique glass, which may require specialized care.
