1. Antibiotics
Magnesium supplements can significantly reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics, particularly tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. This happens because magnesium binds to these antibiotics in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble complexes that prevent the antibiotics from entering the bloodstream effectively. As a result, the antibiotics may not reach therapeutic levels, potentially leading to treatment failure or antibiotic resistance.
Common antibiotics affected include doxycycline, minocycline, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin. To minimize this interaction, it is recommended to separate the doses of magnesium supplements and these antibiotics by at least 2 to 4 hours. This timing adjustment helps ensure the antibiotic is absorbed properly without interference.
2. Bisphosphonates
Bisphosphonates are medications used to treat osteoporosis by inhibiting bone resorption. Magnesium supplements can interfere with the absorption of bisphosphonates such as alendronate, risedronate, and ibandronate if taken too close together. This interaction may reduce the effectiveness of the osteoporosis treatment.
To avoid this, patients should take bisphosphonates first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, then wait at least 2 hours before taking magnesium supplements or any other mineral-containing products. This spacing helps ensure the bisphosphonate is absorbed as intended.
