1. Location of GB34 point
The Gallbladder 34 (GB34) acupressure point is located on the lateral side of the lower leg, just below the knee. To find it precisely, start at the head of the fibula — the bony prominence you can feel on the outer side of your knee. The GB34 point is situated slightly anterior and inferior to this bone, in a small depression. This spot is accessible by gently running your fingers along the outer leg below the knee until you locate this hollow.
GB34 is traditionally considered a key point for the muscles and tendons, often referred to as the “influential point” for these tissues in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Accurate identification of this point is essential for effective acupressure targeting muscle stiffness and joint discomfort.
- Locate the head of the fibula on the outer knee.
- Move your fingers about one finger-width forward and downward into the hollow.
- Apply gentle pressure to confirm sensitivity at this point.
2. Location of ST36 point
The Stomach 36 (ST36) acupressure point is located on the anterior aspect of the lower leg, below the knee cap. To locate ST36, measure four finger-widths down from the lower edge of the patella (kneecap) along the shinbone. Then move approximately one finger-width lateral (to the outside) from the anterior crest of the tibia (shinbone). ST36 lies in the muscle belly just off the bone, where the tissue feels slightly tender to pressure.
ST36 is a widely used point in acupressure and acupuncture due to its systemic effects on energy, digestion, and muscle strength. It is often targeted to improve circulation and reduce fatigue, which can indirectly support muscle recovery.
- Start from the bottom edge of your kneecap.
- Measure down four finger-widths along the front of your shin.
- Shift your fingers about one finger-width to the outside from the shinbone.
- Press gently to identify the sensitive spot for ST36.
