20 coconut oil hacks most don’t know

1. Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment

To deeply condition dry or damaged hair, warm 2 to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil until it becomes liquid but not hot. Apply it evenly from mid-length to the ends of your hair, avoiding the scalp if you tend to get oily roots. Leave the oil on for at least 30 minutes; for best results, cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it overnight. Then, wash out thoroughly with a gentle shampoo to prevent residue buildup.

Coconut oil’s medium-chain triglycerides penetrate the hair shaft, replenishing moisture and reducing protein loss, which helps minimize breakage and enhances shine. It’s particularly effective for hair damaged by heat styling or chemical treatments.

  • Not suitable for very fine or oily hair types as it may weigh hair down or cause greasiness.
  • Avoid applying coconut oil to hair with scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, as it might exacerbate symptoms.

2. Natural Makeup Remover

Use a small amount of coconut oil—about half a teaspoon—applied to a cotton pad or your fingertips to gently dissolve makeup. Massage onto the face, focusing on areas with stubborn waterproof eye makeup. Wipe away with a warm, damp cloth and follow with a mild cleanser to remove any oily residue.

The oil’s lipid content breaks down makeup formulas without harsh chemicals, while simultaneously moisturizing the skin. Unlike many commercial removers, it doesn’t strip natural oils, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

  • Not recommended for use around the eyes if you have a history of clogged pores or milia, as the oil can block follicles.
  • Avoid using on very oily or acne-prone skin unless you thoroughly cleanse afterward.
