15 Deadly Kidney Signs You Must Catch Early

6. Metallic Taste or Bad Breath

Accumulated waste products in the blood, a condition called uremia, can alter taste perception and cause a persistent metallic taste. This may make food taste bland or unusual, leading some to lose interest in eating.

Uremic breath is often described as ammonia-like or sour and persists despite oral hygiene efforts. This symptom reflects advanced kidney impairment and should prompt urgent medical evaluation.

7. Shortness of Breath

Shortness of breath can result from fluid overload when kidneys fail to balance fluids properly. Excess fluid may accumulate in the lungs (pulmonary edema), causing difficulty breathing, especially during physical activity or when lying flat.

Additionally, kidney disease often leads to anemia due to decreased erythropoietin production, reducing oxygen delivery and contributing to fatigue and breathlessness.

If you notice unexplained shortness of breath, particularly with swelling or fatigue, seek medical attention promptly.

8. Back or Side Pain

Kidney-related pain typically presents as a dull ache or sharp sensation below the ribs or in the flank area (sides). Unlike muscle pain, it does not improve with rest or stretching and may radiate toward the lower abdomen or groin.

This pain can indicate kidney stones, infections such as pyelonephritis, or inflammation. Severe or persistent pain requires immediate medical assessment, including imaging and laboratory tests.
