4. Severe Swelling (Edema)
Edema, or swelling caused by fluid accumulation, is one of the more common side effects of amlodipine. It typically affects the ankles, feet, and lower legs but can also occur in the hands or face. This swelling results from blood vessel dilation combined with fluid retention.
While mild swelling may be manageable, severe or persistent edema can be uncomfortable and interfere with daily activities. It may also signal the need for a medication review or adjustment.
Managing edema involves:
- Elevating swollen limbs when resting
- Wearing compression stockings if recommended
- Monitoring weight and fluid intake
- Discussing with your doctor if swelling worsens or does not improve
5. Shortness of Breath
Shortness of breath while on amlodipine can indicate fluid buildup in the lungs or heart-related issues. It may also be a sign of worsening heart failure in susceptible individuals, as the medication affects vascular resistance and fluid distribution.
If you experience unexplained or worsening breathlessness, especially when lying flat or during minimal exertion, contact your healthcare provider promptly. Early assessment can prevent complications.
6. Gum Overgrowth
Gingival hyperplasia, or gum overgrowth, is a less common but notable side effect of amlodipine. It manifests as swollen, enlarged gums that may bleed easily or interfere with oral hygiene. The exact cause is not fully understood but may involve the drug’s effects on connective tissue metabolism.
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups can help manage this condition. In some cases, adjusting medication or dental treatment may be necessary to control gum enlargement.
